Looking at Youtube, several artists have recorded this song. I think it was Bob Dylan's version that I remember from back in my college daze. Do you know who first made it a hit?

I don' know that it was ever a "hit". I do remember watching the show when i was a kid. Clarence White and that stringbender thing sure gives that telecaster some balls. I would like to hear one live. Ther are several other vids from the show . Being a jazz kind o guy checkout the one with Joe Turner and Count basie. The Iron Butterfly Theme and the Ike and Tina are also pretty good.
